On November 15th, Avery released her latest single, Rain, an atmospheric track with delicate strings, gentle piano and heart-aching lyrics that feel as if they’ve been torn straight from the pages of her diary.

"I wrote Rain about a time when my boyfriend and I were broken up and I was asked on a date by someone else,” Avery explained. “It recounts everything I was experiencing - where I was, what I felt, and what I wanted. It means a lot to me and it’s so cool to see how much it means to others, too."

We had the chance to talk with Avery about her latest single, exploring everything from sonic inspirations to stand-out reactions and her plans for upcoming projects…

When did you decide that music was something you wanted to pursue professionally?

“I grew up always wanting to pursue music, I just wasn’t sure how and I didn’t really know until I was already doing it. As soon as I started posting my songs on TikTok, everything changed and I was immediately thrown into it. I love being an artist and I’m so grateful for that time in 2020 on TikTok for helping me get my start.

How would you describe Rain to someone who hasn’t heard the song yet?

"Rain, to me, is about wanting to take a ‘rain check’ but in a literal sense. I didn’t want to go on that date so badly that I wished I could’ve made it rain so I didn’t have to go. It’s that sort of hopelessness and desperation that I felt in that situation and I know so many others have experienced that. It’s essentially the sister song of To Love Someone Else, which was also written about that situation but while I was in it. It’s a piano-heavy song with live strings and it feels so movie-like, and I’m so proud of it.

Does Rain feel different in any way from your previous releases, and where does it fit within the overall narrative of your discography?

Sonically, it feels the most similar to the focus track of As Written Vol. 2: Somebody New. Both songs feel so cinematic and are real piano compositions. Lyrically and melodically, though, it feels very close to most of my songs.”

During the production process, at what moment did you realize that the vision of the song had come to life?

As soon as we added the cello the song really came to life. It was always vocals and piano and there is something so special about just the two which is why we released a voice memo version as well, but as soon as we added the cello it gave it so much more emotion and I loved it.”

Do you often use voice memos when songwriting, and why was it important for you to release the ‘voice memo’ version of the song, too?

When I posted a TikTok of Rain, it ended up going semi-viral and people really connected with the sound of the keyboard clicks, saying that it sounded like rain. I really loved that and wanted to make sure they got the version of the song they originally fell in love with too!”

We love the single cover and think that it perfectly captures the feeling of the song. How did you and your team work together on that photoshoot to get the final result?

“Thank you! It was very DIY (like most of my art is haha). I spent a night going through Pinterest with my producer/boyfriend Jordan and I found a photo of Sadie Sink laying in a messy bed in a full outfit and I loved it so we did our own version in our house with our bed! We just put a bunch of my clothes and things around me and Jordan stood on the bed and took the photos. It was very DIY but it came out better than I could’ve imagined!

We’re big on lyrics at VoiceNoted, so do you have any favourites from Rain & what do they mean to you?

I love the first line, “you’re not a pain that just goes away on its own for a day, you’re always back later. It’s one of my favourite lyrics I’ve ever written. It feels like dread and helplessness and just waiting for the light at the end of the tunnel and I think it perfectly describes the fresh breakup feeling.”

What music have you been listening to recently - and what songs inspired Rain?

I listen to a lot of Sleeping At Last, Holly Humberstone, and Mori. I think I wanted to make another song that I was proud of like Somebody New because of how piano-focused and cinematic it was and the musicality of it all - I wanted to do that again. I'd had the concept for Rain written in my notes for years before I finally decided to use it!

As always, we’ve collated Avery’s favourites into a playlist:

Next, it was time for some fun questions…

If you were a raindrop and could fall anywhere on Earth, where would you choose?

“I’d probably want to fall anywhere within a stream or creek where I could flow around with water and little fish and frogs and weeds. That just sounds so fun.”

Would you rather: have eyes that can film everything, or ears that can record everything?

I think eyes that can film everything. I’m sure musicians would be expected to pick recording ears, but I love capturing moments in my life on camera - I’ve been recording one second every day with that app (ironically also called “one second every day”) for 5 years now. I’m obsessed with capturing moments and watching them back so I think having eyes that film everything would be a dream to have!”

What’s your star sign, and what’s one trait of that sign that you feel makes you a better songwriter?

I’m a Taurus, and I don’t know too much about Tauruses but what I do know is that they’re stubborn and I think that makes me a better songwriter because I don’t settle for anything I’m not in love with!

We saw that Rain was released ahead of schedule because of such a positive reception from fans, so were there any stand-out reactions to the track that made you think, ‘oh, I have to drop this song soon’?

I think some of the biggest things for me were having artists I knew and looked up to reposting/commenting/liking the video. That’s never really happened to me and it was so cool to get recognition like that. The other thing is how the video had its first big moment right when I posted it and then two weeks later it randomly blew up again and got another million views. I was very confused but so happy about it and I think we all knew then that we had to get the song out ASAP!”

Are there any plans for Rain to be part of a bigger body of work such as an EP/album?

“Yes! Rain is the first single from a project coming out in 2025.”

And finally, what’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given that you’d like to share with future artists who want to follow in your footsteps?

“I was never actually given this advice but I always say it: don’t not release a song just because it didn’t go viral. If you love it and it means something to you, it will mean something to others. Release it and keep posting it and one day it’s going to reach the people who need it most!”

Excitingly, fans won’t have long to wait for new music as Avery’s next single, the boys who don’t know what they want is due to release on January 24th:

An artist who puts storytelling first, we can’t wait to hear her next track, and encourage you all to pre-save the song here and follow Avery on Instagram for the latest updates.

In the meantime, the rest of Avery Lynch’s discography can be found on Spotify. If you’d like recommendations, our favourite tracks are If I’m Being Honest, Kids Table and could never be me!
